Sky Observation: Lived Sky Quality

Sky Observation follows how the sky is experienced across time, and how atmospheric change becomes perceptible as change in lived sky quality.

What is being followed

Lived sky quality encompasses multiple dimensions of experience:

Depth · color · openness · light quality · atmosphere
· bodily orientation · memory · affective-emotional response.

Particular attention is given to deep-blue visibility and recurring stripe-cloud-veil evolution.

Experiential Baselines

Repeated observation creates a basis for comparison across time. It helps reveal what persists, what changes or disappears, and what may gradually become normalized.

This matters whenever we ask what environmental qualities should be understood, protected, restored or carried into the future.

The Deep-Blue Sky

Developed from long-term Sky Observation, this forthcoming edition examines the deep-blue sky as a lived environmental quality, its changing experiential availability, and what may become harder to recognize as altered conditions are normalized.

EEE IN PRACTICE

Long-Term Sky Observation

Sky Observation is the originating field practice from which Environmental Experience Elucidation (EEE) developed. EEE makes first-person environmental experience progressively accessible through descriptive articulation, experiential differentiation, interpretation, and contextualization. Repeated, time-indexed inquiry creates a longitudinal record for examining continuity, change, and possible experiential baseline change.

Scientific Context. Sky Observation investigates lived sky quality while bringing its experiential observations into relation with relevant atmospheric research, scientific evidence, and regulatory monitoring.

Coastal Openness, Crossed

5:49 pm

On an early summer evening at the Baltic coast, lying on the beach brings my body into direct relation with the sky. Its blue depth and openness become intimately present. But this intimacy also sharpens the visibility of what interrupts it. Already sensitized to such interventions, I experience their intrusion here all the more acutely: aircraft trails cut through the blue, gradually spread into cloud-like formations, and make the sky appear as a field of tension between its natural expanse and the persistent traces of human activity.

EAM Note

A comparable disturbance of deep-blue availability was documented in Denmark in August 2025. Read together, the observations establish an experiential reference across consecutive summers, recording recurrence before altered coastal skies become normalized as ordinary.

25 July 2026 · Saale-Unstrut Valley, near Naumburg, Germany

The day began facing the calming vineyard slopes, where the far-visible white letters “Saale-Unstrut,” reminiscent of the Hollywood sign, name the two rivers nourishing the wine region. The gaze wandered across a broad field beneath an expansive sky, with the towers of Naumburg Cathedral visible in the far distance.

At the beginning of the day, the sky was intensely blue. Yet it was already imprinted with contrails. Aircraft appeared sharply white against the deep blue, their trails standing out in strong contrast. The possibility of experiencing the sky’s openness was already visibly crossed, accompanied by a felt human intrusion from which I wanted to escape.

The persistence of this intrusion made it difficult to simply turn away, compelling me to photograph what was unfolding in the sky.

Such reminders of human presence can be experienced almost every day, especially when observing the sky. Their absence has become so rare that experiencing a sky without them can feel almost impossible and that made me angry that morning

Throughout the day, the blue became progressively paler and milkier through the constant visible impact of aircraft.

6:26 pm

By 6:26 p.m., nothing remained of its deep blueness or spatial openness.

Individual traces cut clearly through the sky, while others are already loosening and smearing into parallel bands above the horizon. More vertical traces dissolve differently: they fray to one side, forming fibrous, cord-like edges.

Standing in the open field, there is the possibility of entering the sky’s width with the gaze, yet this possibility is crossed through by contrails: even here, in the intimacy of the early morning, human presence is already there again.

From midday into evening, the observation moves between Saale and Unstrut, from the river embankment into the Blütengrund. Across the afternoon, anthropogenic traces remain active above: individual stripes persist, others spread into translucent veiling, and the blue is withheld as undisturbed depth. The Sunday solitude is not merely accompanied by an altered sky; it is shaped by it.

Early Afternoon — Along the Saale Embankment

The afternoon begins in almost complete solitude: spring-green slopes, dense vegetation, the quiet course of the river, and deep birdsong filling the valley. Only now and then, a bicycle passes along the embankment. The place offers retreat, openness, and the sensory richness of nature.

The disturbance lies above. Across the sky-field, individual stripes remain visible, while others spread into translucent veiling. The otherwise natural deep blue of the sky is not available. Its depth cannot be experienced; crossed and thinned by anthropogenic traces, the sky is held behind a veil.

4:37 pm
6:15 pm

By later afternoon, the observation has moved from the Saale to the Unstrut, into the Blütengrund near the Max-Klinger-Haus. The landscape remains green, quiet, and historically charged, yet the altered sky now enters the whole light quality of the place. The light has become pale, glaring, and strangely detached from the landscape below. In memory, spring afternoons in nature did not carry this foreign glare. The atmosphere feels pressed rather than open. The sky does not breathe above the valley; it is held in veiling, without expanse, without release. Human impact enters the Sunday solitude as a private interference.

The westward sequence shows a narrow anthropogenic stripe already in visible dissolution, loosening into a regular, cord-like fringe along its lower edge. Anthropogenic impact remains continuously observable — in a broader, denser stripe almost parallel to the horizon, in single midday stripes still clearly legible, and in residues of earlier dissolving formations. In the final westward image, the stripe is not the dominant figure; the forms are smeared, streaked, and dispersed into veiling.

Eastward Views · Late Afternoon to Early Evening

The eastward sequence begins with a visible differentiation: individual natural cloud forms appear alongside smeared anthropogenic veiling no longer legible as distinct stripes. Later, the natural cloud forms have disappeared, while dissolved traces of stripe formations remain visible, extending back toward their more or less distinct origins. In the final image, a transparent veiling lies across the sky-field, while a thin, sharply defined stripe enters above it.

27. April · Potsdam · Persistent Parallel Stratification Into the Night

Between 16:01 and 18:51, the sky appears under a dense, grey-blue veil. Yet the veil is not homogeneous. Beneath and within it, the earlier stripe entries remain perceptible as faint, parallel layers. Their linear sharpness has softened, but their directional order continues to organize the sky-field.

4:02 pm
6:51 pm

By 8:51 pm, the dense veiling has entered a more dramatic evening stage. The earlier parallel layering is still present, now intensified into a broad formation across the lower sky. This parallel stratification remains visible even as the light fades, giving the sky a striking and almost uncanny appearance.

8:51 pm
8:53 pm
9:20 pm

The felt uncanny quality seems to lie in the formation’s foreignness and in its connection to a non-natural appearance. This non-naturalness is carried forward by the persistent parallel stratification and by the unusual light effects bound to it: even as the sky enters night and first starlight appears, the layered order remains visible.

Above the lake in the late afternoon, distinct crossing stripe remnants remain visible, while other stripes have already dissolved into anthropogenic veils. The veiling has advanced to the point that deep-blue sky visibility is no longer experientially accessible, even where some blue remains photographically visible. Residual stripe-formation and veil-formation coexist across the same sky-field.
What is affectively present is a quiet sense of deprivation: through anthropogenic impact, the freedom to encounter a naturally deep-blue sky over the lake is experientially no longer available.

From home and further into the evening, further stripe entries remain visible, while new ones continue to appear across the sky-field. Here too, the photographs hold more blue than the sky itself gave in experience; deep-blue sky is no longer there in lived reality. Across the sequence, the interference persists over time and across directions. The curtailment of freedom already felt at the lake continues into the evening.

15 December 2025

The morning sky is already crisscrossed by anthropogenic traces: stripes that seem to dissolve, yet, in thinning, they keep veiling the deeper blue, shifting it into a merely bluish cast that never reaches that depth again that day, while the sunlight hardens into a white-ish, dazzling glare.

9:15 am

5 November 2025

Broad whitish bands stretch across the morning sky, still recognizable as linear in origin even though they have spread outward. The bands do not simply fade; they blur laterally, as if drawn out with a wide brush, becoming smeared, stripe-ish formations. They produce zones of uneven density, locally muting the blue field. This unevenness alters the light conditions at ground level: the brightness turns generally blinding, as though the smeared bands refract and diffuse the sunlight into a pervasive glare. What appears is a wide-area smearing without homogenization, rather than covered by one unified veil.

9 August 2025 – Denmark

In early August, around midday in Denmark, the sky appears crossed by anthropogenic stripes. The blue becomes dulled, and throughout the day it returns only in a form that does not reach a deep-blue state. Again, it is important to note that the blue of the sky in the photographs appears far bluer than the blue of direct experience; this slightly greyed blue, in particular, is unfortunately not rendered accurately.

22 June 2025 – Naumburg, Germany

The sky observation comprises a morning sequence (09:36–10:02) and images from the same day and location in the evening (17:22–19:13). In both sequences, dissolution patterns of the phenomenological “stripe-cloud-veil” structures are discernible, though their temporal behavior differs. In the morning, predominantly vertical stripes transition into an overall greyed, veil-dominant sky; the previously deep blue shifts toward a grey-bluish tone. In the evening, vertical stripes reconfigure into clearly visible horizontal stripes, so that the stripe-structure becomes dominant over the veil-structure. The blue does appear bluer toward evening, even in direct experience, yet the blue re-presented by the camera is markedly deeper and more saturated than what was visible to the naked eye.

7 May 2025 – Potsdam, Germany

A fan-shaped field of stripes structures the evening sky: several broad, softly tapering bands run from the zone of the setting sun and draw diagonally into the open expanse. The stripes function like vectors, directions that gather the gaze, since they seem, toward the lower edge, to converge in a shared vanishing point, where the orange evening light along the horizon is most intense. This produces a peculiar directed order, formed by strict geometry in a soft medium. A gridded sky, in which the luminous zone of sunset acts as an origin and the stripes organize space like linear perspective. Within this fan, the stripes are not homogeneous. Some appear lighter, milky-whitish; others darker, grey-bluish. Between them lies a subtle play of densification and thinning, so that each stripe is at once band and dissolution.

23 April 2025 – Stripe-Veil Evolution (Mariánské Lázně / Marienbad, Czech Republic)

Between 09:36 and 10:15, the anthropogenic stripe structures increasingly gave rise to continuous veiling, obscuring the sky’s original blue.
